Tips On Beginning A Trucking Career?
Attend a company-sponsored training program! And definitely get CDL training instead of “learning from a friend” or “going it alone”! I have heard tons of horror stories about people not getting properly trained at a truck driving school and they end up with a CDL license and no one will hire them!
CDL training helps you get your CDL and will also help get you a driving job (good ones at least) so you don’t have to job hunt on your own. I went through Driver Solutions (http://www.otrdrivers.com) and their company-sponsored program meant that I was pre-hired with a company that paid my tuition and gave me a job right after training. It was perfect for me and I don’t owe thousands of dollars to a school or company for training!! That’s my biggest suggestion!

Think carefully about this before you do it. Trucking is not an easy job. A lot of folks think you just sit there and drive. NOT. Be prepared to do some manual labor, as well. Some locations will require you to get the load to the rear of your trailer so the forklift can take it off. Depends on the company.
Your best bet is to find a driving school and inquire there. Preferably, you should have an excellent driving record, and eventually you’ll be required to pass the CDL driving test and a physical.
If you do eventually start a career in trucking, choose the company you work for carefully. My brother went to work for a long haul company, and was stranded more than once due to shoddy maintenance on the trucks, and raggedy equipment. Good luck.
