Nc Cdl License And Training?
This is what my husband and I are planning to do in the next two years. I am going to get CDL training and License and my husband who know very little english will ride with me along with our 2 year old son. My question is can my husband recieve his CDL licensure with a translator? And if he can what do we need to do? And also if he gets his CDL license, even though not employed by the company, can he drive part time to give me a break while on the road?
Then after the two years our son wil go back to school and we would try to find some work locally. Is it possible to work this out? Please help.

Short Shrimp is more or less right on the money. Truck driving isn’t as EZ as it looks. It’s not just going from point A to B. I’m not trying to knock you or him. But just thinks about it. These vehicles are cover under federal law. Trust me I own one. Hows he going to deal with shippers, DOT, fill out his log book and he has to do that himself it’s the law. His hand writing you can’t do it for him and let him sign it. And how can he drive it down the road if he can’t read the sign’s? There’s bridge weights, height’s and just flat out NO TRUCKS. You have to be able to read your paper’s that go with your load. It’s not a game out there you can kill someone. You have to go go go not slow down to 20 on the big road and HAY Honey get up what did that sign say? You have to make split second decisions and if you can’t read you don’t have the information to do this with out endangering everyone around you. It might be a nice dream but no it will not work. But If you want to try good luck.

This is really not the place to ask this type question because it involves laws and regulations regarding commercial licensing. Ask your local Dept. of Motor vehicles and the Federal agency (DOT?) involved with it. Also you should clarify company policy with the company you will drive for for the “team driver” question. Be safe.

First off… a newly licensed driver is not going to be allowed to take the family along. You will have to go on the road with a trainer first. This is a must. The reputable companies that hire newly licensed drivers all do this.
Second, your husband will need to know english to get his CDL. He will have a hard time finding employment if he doesn’t speak, read, write english. A translator can’t be with him all the time.
If you do manage to get a company to allow you to take them along, and if he does manage to get his CDL… the trucking company will NOT allow him to drive UNLESS he is an employee as well, and you are running team.
What you are proposing is strictly against all company policies and insurance rules. If there ever was an accident, and it was proven he was at the wheel, there will be h**l to pay as the company’s insurance would be VOID ! Also, he would have to sign a passenger waiver releasing the company from any and all liability while you are at the wheel. Same for your son. The company does not cover passengers unless they are employees.
