If he is diagnosed as diabetic, with insulin injections, his CDL will be disqualified under Federal Regulations. 49 CFR 391.41 (b)(3) which means he will not be allowed to drive.
Although his employer can’t fire him for being diabetic,(Americans with Disabilities Act) they probably could lay him off for not having a CDL anymore, unless there is other work available (such as desk duty or running the yard truck) which can make up his time. – I was a rep for our Union.
By the way, Insulin is NOT sugar. Insulin is a chemical which aids the body’s absorbion OF sugar.

shouldnt cause him to get fired unless the trucking firm has a rule about drivers and insulin

no insulin is not a ‘narcotic’, like vicodin and that kind of stuff – it’s to help balance the blood sugar level. Unless he’s doing stuff he’s not supposed to, they cannot fire him for that. If anything, being put on the insulin should be a good thing!

No, they wont and cant fire him but, he will have to have his physical taken more often than someone who doesnt have diabetes to make sure that he is safe to drive. If he has seizures though, there is a law that states specifically that they cannot drive a commercial vehicle.

No, insulin isn’t narcotic, so it shouldn’t affect his ability to drive.

he wont get fired..not for having to take insulin. If he was put on drugs on which he was unable to drive maybe then…but not for insulin

No they cant fire him because its ordered by his doctor. As long as he has proof that is anyway

No, I sold insurance for OOIDA (Owner Operators Independant Drivers Association) More than half of the Drivers I spoke to were diabetic. I would say your father has nothing to worry about. If I were you I would help him stay on top of controlling the diabeties. Some pretty bad stuff can happen if you ignore it. Hope this helps

A company cannot discriminate against health or disability. But, the insulin injections should not hinder his driving ability at all. When he first starts taking them he will know on a personal basis what effects the insulin has and will eventually know when he needs to inject. If you look in the OSHA laws and regulations it should state something along those lines.
