Is Trucking A Good Career Right Now?

It’s excellent. Everything you see right now, has been on a truck. Get in the game. See the world, and get paid.

Yes and no. It should be a sound recession-proof field and I think it tends to pay well. Then again, if you are into family, constant road trips away don’t help.

To be truthful yes and no. I am a freight agent and we are having a hard time getting our customers to re negotiate the freight rates. They are still wanting to use the rates that we locked in over 7 years ago. With the fuel prices being so high, the company that I am an independant agent for is all Owner Operators, it is costing that owner over 63 cents per mile just to put fuel in that truck. I also own a truck and my husband runs it for us. Yes we made over 175 grand last year, but once the expenses came out we only cleared around 22 grand on the truck money. Fuel cost are eating us a live.
Normally we would clear over 30 grand in savings every year. So when the rates go up and fuels prices come down, yeah then I would go for trucking. My husband loves what he does. If you have a family though, it will be tough on you and your loved ones to deal with you being gone all the time. Owning that truck and making payments, along with paying for the maintenance, means you will run most of the 48 states for weeks at a time.
    Good luck and best wishes!

The money is pretty poor. Working for a company, you might make between 40K and 50K a year. It’s enough for a single person to live on. But, certainly not enough to support a family and buy the “American Dream”.
Independants can make upwards of 100K a year. This money is decent. Not great…. but you can survive and actually support a family and buy the “American Dream”. However, to make that money, you’ll be doing long haul trucking…. which means you will miss much of the family life you’re supporting.
Gasoline is cutting into the profits. It now costs over $600 each time you filler up.
