Is This For Real? Truck Driver Rates?
My Daughters Boyfriend 21 has convinced her to move to Calgary this summer by telling her that he can get a job driving truck for $5000 a week. I have questioned this several times and maybe I’m a dumby but if this is true I’m closing my business and driving truck too

The only truckers I know who make that kind of money per week are owner/operators….and more than half of that ends up going into the fuel tank.
I have never heard of a company driver earning that kind of money, take-home….EVER. There has to be a catch; most likely that he’s got to pay for fuel and/or maintenance on the truck. Not even the high-dollar end of trucking- car hauling, household moving, specialized freight, etc….brings a company driver that much money. Top end for a company driver hauling specialty freight is around $1800-2000 weekly….and that is pretty rare.
The trucking industry is pretty rampant with recruiters and companies blowing sunshine up people’s behinds with promises of “big money”…..With trucking and all things in life, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. I just hope your daughter & boyfriend are able to take care of themselves and pull themselves out of a bad situation should things not turn out the way they’d hoped. You may want to encourage them to do some more research, if you can.

That would be nice… but it’s not even close to realistic… even if you’re an owner/operator.
If he’s REALLY lucky he may pull in $1500 – 2000 /week as a company driver.
The boom in Alberta is not going to last forever… eventually that ‘bubble’ will pop. And as it sits… housing is expensive and hard to find these days because of the same boom.
I know someone who went there and came back to Ontario after they realized the grass isn’t always greener on the other side of the fence, so to speak. Some people do manage to stick it out and make it work though.

what kind of truck?
some people call some types of equipment trucks even though they are not trucks…
an equipment operator in a union can make that.
a truck driver dont make that.
i would start to worry about why he is telling lies to your daughter… that could end badly.
if he is really pullin in 5000a week, hes probably dealing drugs.
or hes a loser and is just lying to get a full time live in lover who can’t afford to go back home because he dont really make 5k a week.

Take a look around… there are many drivers laid off and/or taking odd jobs and short hauls… The gasoline prices are partially to blame… If the boyfriend were making good money.. he would never be home… in Calgary… he would be on the road…. better keep your business …
