Is A Career In Truck Driving Worthwhile?

I’m thinking of changing my career this summer from being a teacher. You all know that as teachers we get paid very low wages, we work long and stressful hours. Is anyone out there a trucker? Do you recommend this type of career? I’ve heard the money is very good, but are the wages really good as they say?

    Hi,
I can suggest some place where you can talk to drivers who are out there everyday. They can give you the cold honest facts about the industry. A friend and I started up a group that is dedicated to knew and wanna-be drivers. We give them all of the information they will need and we also have a mentorship program in place for those that would like more one on one help. We are free to join and the group is strictly moderated so there is no funny stuff going on like some groups. We are over 400 members strong with many “seasoned” drivers, a couple of state troopers, and some dispatchers. Why not come and check us out and if you don’t like what you find you are always free to leave. If you join make sure you browse through the file and database. We have worked hard on putting tons of information in there for your use. If you decide to join it will ask you for a 50 word comment as to why…just put in that Susan sent you and you will have no problem getting in as long as you have a clean profile. No nude photos on profile. Hope to see you there.

The money can be very good! But the hours can be very long. And if you’re doing longer haul driving across the country, then you could be away from your family and out on the road for a long time. Some do short hauls within the local or region. This way, they’re not away from family and friends for nearly as long.
Now one thing you should take into consideration is the impact rising gas prices have had on the trucking industry. Trucks run on desiel, which is already over $5 in many places! So truckers are paying much more for fuel than they were before. And salaries haven’t gone up to match, so it’s coming out of their own pockets.
How long this will last, who knows? But I did want to mention that because it is something that’s been hurting truckers all over the country.

My son is a trucker. He is a “company man” not an independent owneroperator. The owneroperators are the ones who are coughing out $20,000 a month for fuel. If you work for a company, they foot that bill.
There is OTR (over the road) or regional. My son did his first 9 months OTR and after getting the experience he changed companies and got a regional area that has him home every night. Some days earlier than others but 99% of the time he is home.
Depends on if you want to be out on the road or home? What is your family life? There are men & woman drivers as well as husbandwife teams.
    I say go for it.

A FEW truckers make good money. The rest think $30k is good money.
