Here's my 2 cents;
my dad was truck driver for about 10 years. He didn't do "long haul", but he would be gone anywhere from a few hours to a week. And he was on call, so whenever the phone rang he was gone.
It basically destroyed our relationship, I was daddies little girl, now we can't stand each other. People have told me its because he "abandoned" me, in a way. I'm not sure.
If you have young children, I would say go home! Be with your kids. My dad missed out on 10 years of my life, and now I'm moving away to start my own life. He missed out, and so did I.

I have been an otr truck driver for 13 yrs and absolutly love it. For the first few oh 3-4 months, it was really hard being away from my wife and 3 kids. I was out 32 days the first trip and i was completely homesick and worried about my loved one back home. Now i am used to missing them but always look forward to seeing them soon. i talk to them on the phone every night when im away. I did this the very first few months too and it helped a lot. I would say stick with it for a few months and if you absolutly cant stand it, quit.
any mroe questions or more info email me at keeper4life8@yahoo.com

It's the hardest part of being a driver. Being away from your loved ones is ruff. I'm not going to lie, it doesn't get much easier, but you do kinda get used to it. Try not going out so long. After my first six months driving, I found another job as a driver that keeps me out 4 to 8 days at a time and gets me at home for the same amount of time I was out. Keep your head up. In about 2 to 3 years you should be able to find a local job that will have you home every night.
