Being A Trucker?

Why some people prejudge Truck drivers? I am bringing up this issue because I am considering becoming one. When I said this to my love ones, theirs responded were not pleasant. I tried to make them see the pro’s in the trucking field, but they just turned that image upside down.
I know being a truck driver has its downs like any other career field. People sometimes forget that driving a truck requires skills, and it is a honest living. Not to mention that it is a good paying field with job security.
Why does people do respect truckers? Is the movie that they showed on tv with trucker’s image as fat, long hair, tatoo, smelly, uneducated?
Why people see them this way? I do not understand.
